Man sits at his laptop using Voiceitt

Voiceitt’s personalized speech recognition is designed to adapt to each user’s unique way of speaking. However, accuracy can vary over time — even for users who have been using Voiceitt successfully. Below are the most common reasons accuracy can fluctuate, and practical steps to help restore or improve performance.

1. Changes in Speech Patterns

Speech can change for many reasons — progression of a medical condition, fatigue, illness (like a cold), or even changes in medication or hydration. When your speech sounds different from the original recordings, the model may not recognize words as accurately.
What to do: Record 50–100 new phrases. Once you reach the next training “level,” Voiceitt automatically updates your personal speech model, improving recognition with your current speech patterns.

2. Breath Support, Volume, or Speech Rate

Reduced breath support, speaking more quietly, or changing your rate of speech can all impact clarity.

What to do: In Dictate Mode, Voiceitt is generally forgiving of volume or speed changes. Still, try to speak at a consistent loudness and pace. If you’re using Speak Mode, aim for short, natural phrases rather than long sentences.

3. Changes in Environment

Background noise (TV, fans, people talking, outdoor noise) can interfere with Voiceitt’s listening accuracy.
What to do:

  • Try using Voiceitt in a quieter environment.
  • Consider adding an external or noise-canceling microphone if background sounds are unavoidable. You can also check out the StenoMask microphone available on The Babel Group’s website or request that your local Assistive Technology (AT) lending library purchase one for you to try.

4. Change in Device or Microphone

Switching devices (for example, from an iPad to a phone, or to a new computer) can impact audio input quality and processing. Similarly, using a different microphone or headset can affect sound levels and clarity.

What to do:

  • Keep using the same device when possible.
  • If changing devices, retrain a few recordings to help Voiceitt adjust.
  • Use a high-quality or external microphone for clearer recordings.

5. Internet Connection or Cloud Access

Voiceitt’s speech recognition is completely cloud-based, meaning it relies on an active internet connection for accurate processing and response. If your connection is slow, weak, or unstable, accuracy and responsiveness may be affected.

Additionally, some users have experienced issues when using Voiceitt through an iOS shortcut (a saved web shortcut that looks like an app but opens the browser). If you notice problems when launching Voiceitt this way, it’s best to use the Chrome or Safari browser directly for optimal performance.

What to do:

  • Check your Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
  • Close other apps that might be using bandwidth or accessing the microphone, as this can interfere with Voiceitt’s recognition.
  • If using an iOS shortcut, try opening Voiceitt directly from Chrome or Safari instead.

6. Personal Vocabulary Settings

If you use specific names, terms, or phrases that are not part of the general dictionary, ensure they’re added to your Personal Vocabulary.
What to do: Double-check that custom words or names are saved in your vocabulary list and re-record them if pronunciation has shifted.

Summary: Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

✅ Has the user’s speech changed recently? → Record 50–100 new phrases.
✅ Is there more background noise or a different microphone? → Adjust environment or use a mic.
✅ Has the user switched devices? → Re-record a few key phrases.
✅ Is the internet connection stable? → Test connectivity and close other apps using the microphone.
✅ Is the personal vocabulary still active and up to date? → Re-record or confirm terms.

Voiceitt learns and grows with each user — but occasional recalibration helps keep recognition aligned with how you sound today. A short refresh in training can make a big difference in accuracy and overall experience.
